The Democrats are one of the two major parties represented throughout US government. For the most part, they can be defined in opposition to the policies of their largest rival party, the Republicans. Where the Republicans are considered the conservative party favoring business professionals and small government, the Democrats are considered by many to be more liberal, favoring big government programs and pandering more to the middle class.

In the digital age, the Democrats were the first to strike thanks to the Howard Dean campaign that brought the party into social networking sites and of course started many Democrat community blogs and fundraising sites. Among other things, this online style of grassroots campaigning and fundraising was responsible for the Democrats electing the first African American president with the election of Barack Obama in November of 2008.
